Al Busaidy wins Oman Football Association poll

Al Busaidy wins Oman Football Association poll

Staff ReportPublished: September 01, 2007, 00:15
Muscat: Sayyid Khalid Bin Hamad Bin Hamoud Al Busaidy on Thursday won the three-way contest for the Chairman's post in an historical first election to vote Oman Football Association board to office for a four-term.

The election for Chairman and Vice Chairman was so closely-fought that two observers - Fifa's Eisa al Hosni and Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) Charmaine Pereira had to order three rounds of voting to determine the winners.
Under football's governing body's regulations, a winner could be declared only after polling over 51 per cent of votes.

Saleem Bin Qasim Al Zawawi bowed out of the contest after polling only five votes in the first round. Finally Sayyid Khalid, who was nominated by Seeb Club, polled 29 votes against 14 polled by Sayyid Suleiman Bin Hamoud Al Busaidy, who held the vice-chairman's post in the outgoing board.

Earlier, the general assembly of 43 members also elected Salem Bin Said Al Wahaibi, first vice-chairman and Shaikh Saif Bin Hilal Al Hosani as second vice-chairman.
The newly-elected nine board members of the OFA are Talal Al Amer, Ebrahim Al Qasmi, Hasan Al Ajami, Sa'ad Al Shamis, Naser Al Balushi, Nayef Al Marhoon, Seif Al Jabri, Ahmad Al Habsi and Talal Al Amri. The new association will meet today to assign the roles to each member and discuss the future plan of the OFA.

"It's milestone in the history of Oman football. Probably this is the first time in the Middle East a football association is elected after a democratic voting process," said Sayyid Khalid, who as the President of Fanja Club brought the country's first team trophy in 1989.

Gabriel Calderón Oman Football team coach

Gabriel Calderón

Gabriel Humberto Calderón (born February 7 1960 in Rawson, Chubut Province) is a former Argentine football midfielder and striker.

Calderón played in several teams including Argentine Racing Club de Avellaneda and ClubAtlético Independiente, Spanish Real Betis and French Paris Saint-Germain. He was part of the Argentine team that won the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship, and also played in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain and in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. the main achievement is that he won world cup in 1986 .

After his retirement and a short period working as TV commentator, Calderón moved to coaching. He coached former teams of Caen (1997~2000) and Lousane (2002~2003).
Calderón then took over as the coach for the Saudi Arabia national football team at the end of 2004, and successfully guided the Saudi team to qualification for the Football World Cup 2006 in Germany by beating Uzbekistan 3-0 in Riyadh. Calderón said "Qualifying to the World Cup is the dream of every coach and I'm more than satisfied with our campaign in the qualifiers." "I'm very happy with the qualification since that was the goal I was aiming at when I first arrived in the Kingdom," he added.

However, in December 2005, Calderón was fired by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation as they were dissatisfied by the team's poor showing in the West Asian Games, and was replaced by Marcos Paqueta.

On the 9th of April 2007, Calderón signed as the coach of the Oman national team[1].

Oman football association

The Oman Football Association (Arabic: الاتحاد العُماني لكرة القدم) is the governing body of football in Oman. It was founded in 1978, has been a member of the Asian Football Confederation since 1979 and of FIFA since 1980. Oman Football Association is a relatively young member of the football fraternity. They were founded in 1978 and the following year, joined AFC before making the FIFA family in 1980.

Despite being a young association, their achievement at the youth level is impeccable. In the 1996 and 2000 AFC U-17 Championship, they became champions of Asia and representing Asia in the 1995 FIFA World U-17 Championship held in Ecuador, they managed a record high fourth place finish.

At the senior level, success has been far and few. However, lately they seemed to have announced their arrival at the senior events. They reached the Asian Cup, China 2004 final rounds and did well against Asian champions Japan. In the Gulf Cup, they reached the final, only to lose to Qatar in the final.

Players such as Imad Ali have been impressive and are looked at as the future of Omani football. In addition, Oman is looking to take advantage of FIFA?s assistance in the GOAL project to further develop the game in Oman.

Oman has a total of 45 clubs divided into three divisions. The First Division has 12 clubs, Second Division has 13 clubs while the Third Division has 20 clubs.

Oman Football Association members resign by Saied

All the Oman Football Association (OFA) members and board of directors, with the exception of two, have submitted their resignation to the Minister of Sports Affairs, Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidi on the 26/12/2006. Two members, who were not present at the board meeting, are yet to submit their resignation.

The resignation of the OFA members comes in the wake of the below par performances of our national soccer teams in its different age categories. The resignation was called upon by the general public and some 17 regional clubs. As a result, an extraordinary general meeting was held on 18-12-2006.

To me it looks like the members of the Omani Football Association were fearful of the extraordinary general assembly and the possible resulting embarrassment, hence have opted to resign instead of being sacked.

There are a few questions, however, in and around this OFA resignation mainly, is it the right timing for such an action to be called upon ? What will be the impact of the resignation on our participation in the Gulf Cup in Abu Dhabi ? Who will be the new chairman of the OFA ? Was H.E. Ali Al Sunaidi correct in scheduling an extraordinary meeting in this particular period ? What is the real motive behind this group resignation ?

Only a few days after writing an article about the responsibilities of different entities towards the overall well being of football in Oman, where I have made clear that the Omani Football Association has been the main culprit in victimizing soccer in Oman, we were stunned by the news of this group resignation by the board members of the OFA. Although it has been called upon for quite a long time by the general public, the timing of the resignation is somewhat awkward and could cause further debacle to the already underperforming soccer national team.
Resignation reasons that we have been told

More than 17 clubs and the general public have been asking for such a resignation due to the recent performance of the OFA.
Hidden motives

In my opinion, the board members were fearful of being sacked as a result of the extraordinary general meeting and hence have opted to resign. They are aware that they have taken football in Oman back to the dark days with their miss planning and disorganization and, knowing that they only seek easy solutions, perhaps discovered that there isn

Iraq secured a fourth successive quarter-finals appearance and a clash with co-hosts Vietnam after a dire 0-0 draw with Oman on Monday that was enough to ensure top spot in Group A.
Oman needed to win to stand any chance of making the knock-out stages but they proved bereft of inspiration in a lacklustre affair.

Iraq knew that a point was good enough to guarantee their qualification from the group and they showed no ambition whatsoever to attack.

Oman did at least show some desire to get forward but most of their first half chances fell to Ismail Al Ajmi, who was having a night to forget.

His first chance saw him run clear of the Iraqi backline but he lost a race for the ball with goalkeeper Noor Sabri.

Next he got on the end of a deep cross and the ball dropped to his feet on the edge of the six yard box but he somehow shot against the legs of a stricken defender lying in front of him.
Another cross dropped kindly for him in the penalty area but this time he barely made contact and the chance went begging.

Oman kept pressing after the break but increasingly left themselves exposed at the back, offering Iraq encouragement to come forward.

Still Oman's Ahmed Hadid came close to breaking the deadlock with a speculative long range effort that Sabri tipped over for a corner.

As the pedestrian match wore on Iraq retreated even further into their shells while Oman completely ran out of attacking ideas and resorted to pumping hopeless long balls forward to their diminutive strikers.

Oman did almost snatch a late winner but Younis Al Mushaifri's header from a corner sailed inches over the bar.
